BIOSPHERE RESERVE OF BERLENGAS.
Year of creation
2011
Covering a total area of 18502.3 ha (of which 4% land and 96% sea) this Biosphere Reserve comprises the Berlengas archipelago (Berlenga, Farilhões - Forcadas and Estelas), a marine corridor, and the town of Peniche - a living representation of the historical, cultural and economic interaction between mankind and the ocean.
The biodiversity of the Berlengas Islands is highly valuable in terms of conservation considering the presence of endemic flora species as well as nesting sites of several endangered seabird species. The coastal and marine ecosystem of these islands is one of the most biodiverse in the Portuguese waters.
