Year of creation
2020
The Biosphere Reserve of Fogo Island, seeking to embody the principles of UNESCO's MaB Program Strategy (2015-2025) and the Lima Action Plan (2016-2025), is a place committed to the conservation and sustainable use of its natural, cultural and heritage assets in favor of the sustainable development of its communities.
Conservation-wise, the Reserve contributes to the preservation of endemic species and important marine and terrestrial habitats whilst contributing to the international conservation efforts of protected species as sea turtles, cetaceans and birds that visit Fogo throughout their life cycles.
Furthermore, the reserve promotes the island's culture based on its unique historical use of natural resources over several centuries, particularly in its relationship with the imposing volcano of Fogo.
