The Transboundary Biosphere Reserve of the Tejo / Tajo International, classified in 2016 by UNESCO, is located along the Spanish border and encompasses the municipalities of Castelo Branco, Idanha-a-Nova and Vila Velha de Ródão in mainland Portugal.
This territory is characterized by pastures and dryland crops, by forests of holm, cork, and black oaks and by riverside vegetation, which provide habitat for a wide range of birds, including species with vulnerable conservation status in Portugal and Europe, such as the black stork, the black vulture, the imperial eagle, Bonelli's eagle and the white-bellied cormorant.
